Productive projects for peace

The peace building process in Colombia must involve all sectors of society to be successful and sustainable. Among these actors, the business and productive sector is one of the most strategic due to its great capacity to generate wealth, human capital, knowledge, and employment in the post-conflict scenario.

Their participation in the peace building process brings benefits in several areas. On the one hand, the company must assume an active role in society that transcends mere compliance with the law and assumes the commitment, like any other actor, to do good. On the other hand, not only will the peacebuilding process gain greater legitimacy with the participation of the business sector, but companies, in turn, will be able to reap benefits in terms of building trust and reputation.

It is fundamental, in the current juncture of the implementation of the Peace Agreement, to promote this type of actions by companies towards new enterprises and productive projects that emerged during the implementation of the Agreement and that are focused on promoting economic development and reconciliation in the territories most affected by the conflict.

The initiatives selected for this project were Confecciones La Montaña, Selva Nevada, Mesa Nacional de Café and Impulse Travel, two of them led by former FARC combatants. Throughout the documentation process, the contributions of these initiatives to peacebuilding were identified, as well as the challenges and success factors that have made it possible to extract the 10 lessons that you’ll find here.

This process of documentation and analysis has made possible to confirm that it is indeed possible to generate decisive contributions to territorial transformation and peacebuilding from the productive sector. In addition, it became evident that the strengthening of local markets in territories highly affected by the conflict necessarily requires the strengthening and dynamization of this type of enterprise.
